why is my whirlpool refrigerator making a loud noise whenever the compressor shuts off.?
Its 2 years old and Im the 2nd owner. It uses R 134A with a capillary tube system, and I can feel the compressor shake pretty violently when the thermostat is satisfied. I thought that the compressor mounts were loose so I tightened them and still the noise continues. Should I be worried about liquid slugging?
Do not loosen the compressor mounting bolts. You actually shouldn't have been able to tighten them anymore than what they were when shipped from the factory. They will only tighten so far because they are only partially threaded.
What is probably happening is caused by a broken mounting spring inside the hermetically sealed compressor housing upon which the electric motor sits. If one is broke the motor will bang against the sides of the housing when it shuts off. Nothing you can doe about but since it is only two years old the compressor should carry a five year warranty so have a tech come out and verify the problem and if it is what I suggest it shouldn't cost you nothing to replace (read the warranty as you may have to pay the labor).
