Need to convert a Caloric Prestige Gas Range to propane. Can anyone help me?

Been told that I need to get a Conversion Kit from the manufacturer or a dealer. Too dumb to find them on the net. Not even sure if they are still in business. Would really appreciate some help!

Propane and butane are pretty close to the same "performance"!

The most important thing here is how old is the stove?? All the older ones are already "adjustable"! On practically all "Ranges" built up to the last couple years at least,-- have adjustable "jets" in the oven anyway! If you can adjust the oven, you can pretty well "live with" the burners, - even is they aren't adjusted. The flame will just be too high on them, -(which you can control by turning the control down a little), or the flame will be a little smaller than you might like, -in which case it will take slightly longer to cook something the way you want it!

"Natural gas" on the other hand is quite different, -- it has about "half the kick" that propane or butane has! If you have "fixed orfices, - you have a real problem , - (except in the oven).

Here is how you determine which "jets (or orfices) you have on your stove! Lift top of stove (if possible) and remove one of the burner assenmblies from the stove. You now can see the "orfice (the part that the burner housing plugs on to", -- take wrench of proper size and screw the orfice off of the brass fitting that it screwed on to (this is actually the output end from the control valve). Now you have a little brass "tube shaped" looking thing with threads on one end, and a little hole on the other, - this is the orfice! Look at the fitting you screwed it off of, - does it look like it has a "pointy thing" that looks like a large toothpick sticking out of the middle! If so, you are in luck, as this is is an "adjustable needel valve", -- all it requires is turning it down till the flame is proper size. This can be done with burner "running" - (if you can reach the adjusting "nut"-orfice edge) with the burner assemblies on the fitting). If the top is removeable, you can also run burners ok with the top off of stove, -- You might end up adjusting pilot lights when you finish too!

There is also the regulator which has to be changed, - however all you have to do to change form natural to porpane, - is to take the cap off the top, (it has a little "slug" inside and a spring under it. You take the slug out and turn it upside down and put it back in and put the cap back on that is all for that! Most have "N" or "Nat" printed on one end, and "P" or "Prop" on the other, all this does is change the pressure the spring puts on the diaphram of the regulator, so that the pressure to the stove is changed! Since you need less gas to flow with propane, than with natural!

If you have fixed orfices, then you are going to have to get ones with smaller holes in them. Everybody will tell you they are not available, - but they are probably somewhere, it is just the problem of finding them! There are still Caloric ranges being sold today, but it may just be the name, (instead of the same company)! Propane has a much smaller hole in the orfices. If nothing is available, you can improvise by putting the orfice down with a smooth ended bolt inserted into the inside from end, -- take a "flat nosed punch" of small diameter, and "peen" the brass down,( work around in circles so you get around the hole several revolutions), -it will flatten, and reduce the size of the hole till it is a little smaller than you will need (try reducing at least 1/3 size of the hole)! It does not have to be asymetrical, as the gas mixes with air as it goes down the the "mixing tube" to the Burner Head! Put it back on the burner control and see if it now puts out the right amount of gas to make the flame right! (Don't forget to re-set the regulator first)! If the flame is too small, enlarge the hole a little with a "tiny drill bit" (like increase size maybe .002 -"2 thousanths") and try again. Bear in mind also to adjust the "air" to make maximum quality flame, -- (if gas burns yellow on edges, it is too much gas , - and too little air mixing). Once you have one orfice "putting out" properly, you then know what size the hole has to be on the others!

Now having told you all this, I will tell you that I think it is adjustable all the way through, but gave you the informartion so that you will know how it works!.... My clue here is that you said that "you aren't sure if they still make them", -- so I would guess it is not too new! The "fixed orfice" is a modern innovation (it allows them to produce the stove cheaper), - never mind problems customer might have!!

I started fixing appliances in 1963 when I got married, and now work full time fixing appliances still, -- (after a long list of different occupations in between)!
