What's up with Silicone from France ?
I've noticed several times that most parchment paper for cooking/baking (made out of silicone) and also the oven mitts in silicone are usually made in France ... what's up with that ? Is Silicone a French specialty ? Do they have any patents or something ?
Thanks,
Now that you mention it, it's an interesting thought. You would think that silicone is pretty universal and easy to make, why do the French make silpats?
First, I think most people associate French cooking ware as being high quality. Think Le Creuset, or Emile Henry, or Sabatier. Also, after popularizing said item on various cooking shows, it solidified the connection of French silicone baking sheets.
Second, after checking on wiki, the silpat (or silicone baking pad) was invented by the French chemist Guy Demarle and is produced by the company he founded, called Demarle.
1960: Guy Demarle, a chemist of genius, came up with a new non-stick process designed for the food industry.
A pioneer in the food-standard high-temperature silicone technology, Guy Demarle used this new material combined with a fibre glass structure, to create professional tools designed for the food industry. He first invented a silicone coated sheet, to replace the leather then used by confectioners, then non-stick baguette mats that revolutionised bread cooking, bringing it hygiene, quality and productivity. This is when he developed Silpat - a baking sheet used by bakers and sweets specialists alike, to prepare pastries or work with sugar. Silpat soon turned out to be an essential tool for chefs all around the world. After 25 years of good and faithful service, Guy Demarle retired for a well-deserved rest… But the Demarle spirit on being the cooking flexible non-stick specialist was born.
- 1994: Patrice Jacquelin bought Demarle and launched a new concept: Gourmet Cooking at Home.
Patrice Jacquelin was born with a passion for cooking, in Burgundy, a temple of the French gastronomy. The current chairman and CEO soon became aware of the huge potential of the Demarle brands, and decided that from then on developing the Demarle name meant conquering the everyday cook’s kitchen.
- 1995: The Demarle opted on promoting its products through the party plan marketing.
The success was impressive. Everyday was a new event, the company rapidly acquired an international dimension within Europe, and its turnover has been growing steadily.
