What is an easy way to thaw the frost from a mini-fridge without emptying it?
I have an office mini-fridge that is getting frost buildup and I want to thaw it without having to take the contents out and it outside and letting it melt there. Hot water bottle on the Freezer part? That kind of thing.
Good thinking ...hot water bottle is good idea! Do it right though and turn off the fridge and unplug it also. The only way to do this is when you have scarfed all the edible food up and before you go shopping for more food. That way there is no problem keeping things cool while you wait for old frosty to defrost. I throw a stack of old newspaper in the very bottom of mine to catch all the melt off. Also handy is an empty dish detergent squeeze bottle you can fill with hot water and squirt into the weird pockets around the freezer where the titanic icebergs forms around the back and the freezer and the interior walls. I like a teflon non scratch type spatula to pry and scrape with along with strategic hot water squirts it goes pretty quick. Warning : do not use a screwdriver or steak knife to chip and scrape the hard ice as you might crack or puncture the little channels that the freon gas uses along the freezer top sides and bottom to cool the freezer. Make one of those leak with a nick and the fridge is history! Take your time and leave the
freezer and fridge doors open and change the the newspapers often and keep the floor dry and puddle free! By know means try using a hand held hair Dryer to thaw the freezer with that floor wet or put the toaster in there! You'll get a bit frazzled and get bitten by a nasty shock of your life...and it maybe be your beautiful corpse they find lying there in a puddle hair dryer in hand! NOTICE: watch out for that drip tray thing under the freezer....it will turn into a lake after a bit of defrosting and when it's finally free of the ice you'll pull on it and the whole thing will splash a flood of cold water and weird freezer leavings (see Bundy's toaster leavings) all over you and the floor! GROSS! Take a large empty coffee can a push one leading corner down and it will start to empty so catch that river in the can tand empty some of it out before attempting to wiggle out the drip tray. Also put the big chunks of ice and such in the kitchen sink to melt or throw them on the lawn...don't put them in the potty or they may crack the bowl! Good time once everything is thawed to mop up the inside including the floor till it is perfectly dry before you check that pesky Fridge Light. Check again to make sure the fridge is unplugged and unscrew the light bulb and I bet ya dimes to donuts you shake it and you'll hear the rattle of a burnt out filament. Take the bulb with you to the market when you get the new load of food or to the local building center and buy TWO bulbs so you'll have a spare,
Before you screw in the bulb or plug the fridge back in let's do it right and finish cleaning the interior with lemon or orange scented industrial cleaner... use a green scotch brite pad to get the chunky stuff loose and finish with paper towel wipe down. Use a tooth brush (old one) to do the egg tray thingy and the rubber gasket that gets funky and while your doing the gasket make sure when the door is closed that it fits tighty against the opening ...especially if your fridge seems to be always working hard and motoring all the time...you may need to adjust the door with the hindge screws to improve the fit. Check it with a slip of paper when closed...should be slightly hard to pull the paper out when closed! Now the replace the bulb and plug in the fridge and turn up the thermostat and listen to the motor start up...hear it?...it's working! YEA!
If your motor is rattling try shifting the whole fridge a 1/2" to one side (the fridge sitting on a linolium kitchen floor will tend to vibrate , pounding down the flexible flooring and eventually there will be accually only two or three of the feet touching the floor this making it rattle!) and see if that doesn't quiet it down. Nothing like a clean looking and smelling fridge (don't forget the box of arm of Arm & Hammer!) and your ice cream will stay harder in the freezer too! Happy thawing
