Maytag washer lasted 25 years! but died today - what other brands are this reliable?

I'm in the market for a new washer dryer combo - it may not have to last another 25 years but I would like to know it's almost as reliable. What brands can you recommend? (if you have any stores you can recommend in the Bay Area that would help, too)

Check out Consumer Reports, they will steer you to very reliable models, I would try to stay away from Kenmore from Sears, since Kenmores tend to be made from any manufacturer.

Questions to ask yourself before looking at machines include: How many loads a week are you washing?, Have any kids?, Are you on a city water system or a well?

The answers to those questions can lead you to a machine that could save you money in the long run.

Take for instance the fact that most top-load washers use 40- 50 gallons of water each load, if you are only doing 2-3 loads a week, you might be better off going with a less expensive top-loader, but if you have kids and are doing more like 6-8 loads a week, might want to look at a Front Loader which usually only use 12-20 gallons of water per load.

Sure a front loader is more expensive outright, but think how much money you are saving on water bills. Another advantage of a front-loader is that they use less detergent. If you have soft water (water that doesn't have a lot of minerals in it) you barely have to use any detergent at all, since you are using less water, the detergent doesn't get as dilluted. More savings there.

Another thing you might want to look at is a washer that incorporates a heating unit. This feature is nice if you have kids, since the heating unit brings water into the drum at the correct temperature for the detergent to activate, and there are even washers out on the market that will keep the water temperature at the proper temperature throughout the cycle.

If you can, look at the Whirlpools and see if you can find a place that carries Bosch (yes, like the power tool company). Bosch machines are famous for their quietness and actually have a more European approach to laundry, less harsh chemicals, more time and higher temperatures.
