Maytag Gas Dryer,7 yrs old, replaced igniter yesterday, cleaned all lint, heated up great once. Now what?
The dryer would heat up less and less as over the past 2 months, not lower heat but actually igniting less. After replacing the igniter it worked great for the test run, but has not ignited since. How do I determine what is wrong from here? I replace the igniter yesterday.
We have a Maytag gas dryer (not sure if it is the same model as yours or not). But some things you can try: Unplug, take the front panel off (tape the 2 wires to the door safety switch together and use some extra tape so the connection doesn't short to the frame. Plug in and hit the start button and see if the igniter heats up. It won't heat instantly, it should take a few moments to get to a good yellow heat. if it doesn't get hot or you see sparking or obvious hot spots in the element is is bad or about to go bad. And yes, these elements can fail after a few uses or even one use! We had this happen. If the igniter heats up, you should hear a click and the Gas Valve should open and the flame start. If the igniter heats, but you get no flame, hit the start button again, and while the igniter is hot, try sticking a fairly strong magnet at top of each of the two gas valve solenoids (do one, then the other) if the gas lights when you do this, you have a bad solenoid or the circuit that controls it is bad. We had this happen too. There are several bimetallic sensors that check to see that the drier is not getting too hot, so any of those failing will possibly keep it from heating.
Added:
It could be a problem with the circuit that supplys power to the heater, or even a bad start button, so don't throw out the heater until you are positive it is that part.
