Yes, antennas such as these are DIRECTIONAL, meaning that they focus their transmissions on a much more limited area. They have elements that must be pointed in the exact direction of the signal, or as close in direction as possible to the source. Once properly adjusted in direction, the signal is captured with a higher amplitude for better performance.
The key is you need to KNOW where the signal is to make these very effective. You have to be able to 'see' the source, and then point it directly at it. A regular Wifi antenna is OMNIdirectional so it picks up signals from ANY direction.
