Long Range Wifi
Wifi. How can I make my range for picking up an unlocked signal longer/better?

would this Wi-Fire attena allow me to pick up a unlocked wifi signal from a greater distance then the standard device in my laptop now??

This is the websote for the device http://www.data-alliance.net/servlet/the-112/Wi-dsh-Fire-HFWFG10-500mW-Wireless/Detail

Yes, antennas such as these are DIRECTIONAL, meaning that they focus their transmissions on a much more limited area. They have elements that must be pointed in the exact direction of the signal, or as close in direction as possible to the source. Once properly adjusted in direction, the signal is captured with a higher amplitude for better performance.

The key is you need to KNOW where the signal is to make these very effective. You have to be able to 'see' the source, and then point it directly at it. A regular Wifi antenna is OMNIdirectional so it picks up signals from ANY direction.

So, if you are willing to experiement, and search for the strongest signals, this antenna is worth your time. You'll likely need to use it with some software (Windows includes primative "Available Networks" screens,. but most of these antennas come with a much better, responsive application showing the signal strength for everything in the vacinity)

Lastly, the whole reason for these antennas is to allow legitimate/authorized users to tune into a remote Wifi hotspot that they are allowed to use. Be very careful if you plan to steal wireless bandwidth as various agencies are just beginning to track down people committing theft of service, and in many cases prosecuting the offenders.
