Are there wireless router's that are strong enough to access the internet from home?
Instead of having to go to the library or perhaps the grocery store to get in range of free wifi, are there wireless devices that have strong enough range
to access the wifi from your house?
These places are about 3 to 5 miles away from me.
I don't how strong a range a wifi device can be.
One I saw online was Bountiful WiFi BWRG1000 Long Range Wireless 802.11b/g Router BWRG1000.
Looks like it is the most powerful one legally allowed.
What's the range in miles of this device?
Is there a more powerful one?
Most wireless is line of sight. That means you have to see the antenna, or be so close to it, that the signals manage to get through the walls.
Even with NLOS (Near Line Of Sight) 900Mhz wireless, which works through trees and stuff, it has a limited range if you are not within sight of the antenna.
Most wireless devices have a range of a couple hundred feet in the open, maybe 50 feet through walls. "N" networks go a bit farther...
What worries me is that you want to use "free wi fi". You have to remember that hackers love those, they can sniff your packets and steal all your personal information if it's an open network.
