Kitchen Remodeling Can Be Fun To Do

by Wayne Hemrick on May 27, 2011

The design of the kitchen is a very personal thing. A lot of factors come into play, such as whether you are left or right-handed, your height and your dexterity. You must feel comfortable working there as it can be very dangerous place, so when you move into a new home you might have to do some kitchen remodeling.

The first thing that you have to do is to draw the plans of your ideal kitchen. You must decide what your priorities are as far as the options that are available. It must be functional, safe to work in, and look good. Go around some furniture stores, look in magazines, ask your friends, or even discuss it with your local home designer before you finalize your plans.

You will also have to decide whether you are going to keep the appliances that you have, or purchase new ones that can be specially customized, and built-in, to your new kitchen. If you are buying new ones you must consider their size, durability, and quality. These decisions will also be affected by your budget.

There are quite a few decisions that you need to make when you start planning out your new workspace. You could pick one from one of the specialist manufacturers, who adapt their pre-built units to fit your design. The other option is to have it totally customized, where you make all the decisions right down to cupboard door fittings and light switches. You may even decide to do all the construction work yourself rather than contract it out to a professional fitter.

The size and current design of the space has to be factored into the plan. You will have to plan around the current location of the windows and entry points to the room. If you do not you will be giving yourself a very large building project. Water supply, drainage and electrical points can be relocated, but it would be easier, and more economical, to keep them where they are.

As far as functionality is concerned there are three areas that must be planned around, namely the cooker, the sink, and the refrigerator. These should all be easy to reach whilst cooking. If your sink is in easy view of your reception area, it might be worth planning to have it in a location that it cannot be seen by visitors.

Another three areas that must function together are the food storage area, the preparation area and a clean area. The positioning of an area to store your pots and pans is also important, as you do not want to risk them falling out of the cupboard and hurting somebody. Nothing should be positioned that would mean you have to stretch to reach it. The location of sharp knives, and other dangerous implements should also be considered carefully.

The whole purpose of kitchen remodeling is to create an area that suits you, not that suits the celebrity chef in your magazine. You have got to feel comfortable when working in there. But most of all, it has to be a place that is safe to work in.
