Kenmore Direct Drive washer won't spin on final cycle?
The switch is fine, the machine coupler is fine. Took out the agitator shaft to check clutch and am not sure how to tell if it's bad.
Ok... It won't spin on the final cycle, but it will on the rinse cycle. Did you actually see it spin, or are you just assuming it.
What happens if, when its done, and the water has drained, but the unit has failed to spin (so the clothes are sopping wet), you turn off the washer and turn it back on in the spin cycle. Will it start spinning then?
Those units use something called a neutral spin. The motors are bi-directional. One way is agitation, the other is spin / drain. Going into agitation sets the neutral spin on. When the motor reverses direction to go into spin/drain the first time, the transmission is actually set to neutral, and the tub wont spin. This is to allow the motor the maximum RPM to run the pump, so it can lift water up to 8 ft, in the event of a basement installation with a high drain. After a few minutes, the timer will shut off the unit for about 10 seconds and start up in drain/spin again. Shutting the unit off re-engages the transmission. This time when the unit starts, the tub will spin. Usually, when the nuetral spin goes bad, the transmission no longer goes into neutral, I suppose it could be that its stuck in neutral and wont engage, but if that is the case, it would be the first time I've heard of that happening.
I think that more than likely, your timer isn't pausing the drain/spin cycle to re-engage the transmission. But this would be odd as well, unless you recently changed the timer, and perhaps got the wrong one.
Going back to my original suggestion, run a load through, and when its done, manually put it into a spin cycle and see if it spins. If it does, then your timer is the issue. If it doesn't, then I would say the problem is in your transmission.
The "clutch", is actually called a basket drive, and is accessed from the bottom, under the tub. But I've only ever seen two of those go bad, out of maybe 500 washers. Although its possible that's the problem, Its highly, highly unlikely.
