i want do some clay work with kids-easy sawdust fire?
Either what is a great air dry clay that will not need to be fired and or how hard is the sawdust fire in a can? I did it way back in high school but forget. There are tons of tutorials online and I think I can pull it ff. My questions are- I will get a low fire clay -any suggestions- and will not bisque fire. I want to do fairy large pieces- How likely are they to break and how hard do they actually get? I'm not sure I will have the kids burnish. I know I can probably rent kiln time locally but ..wan to try this..maybe I'll get a kiln craigslist eventually..oh and I live in a tight neighboor hood-how annoying is the smoke?
that's fairly large ..we won't be making faeries!
any saw dust fires I've done was on bisqued ware to get a smoke effect. I don't think it gets hot enough to fire up to bisque.
The smoke is noticeable, so if you aren't allowed any fires at all it wouldn't be advisable, if you are allowed fires in a fire pit it would be OK.
I think air dry clays aren't ending up very hard, but without firing it's probably your best option. Though I don't think it's good for large pieces.
How about making paper mache instead. Or something involving plaster bandages?
