Electric Range Element controls act like a dimmer for seperate circuit?
How is it possible that my electric range element and oven controls act like a dimmer for a completely different circuit in the house? This house has an old Cutler-Hammer 60 amp fuse panel - 2 removable fuse blocks...one for main power, one for the range...each one has two 35amp 250v ferrule cartridge fuses. Then we have four 110 circuits ...one for the furnace, one for the majority of the plugs in the house, one not being used(for whatever reason?) and one for the all lights and 3 plugs. The latter (#4 ) is the circuit that's being controlled by the range. All the electrical will be fine for a while, then it seems like the fuse blows. But the fuse isn't blowing...the power is somehow being re-directed to the range. Everything is going to be re-wired with a new CB Panel for sure, but can't see any reason why this is happening. The wiring is TOTALLY SEPERATE !! Any insight would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.
The range should be operating at 220 volts. It will only demand/draw whatever power the resistance of the burners needs. This is controlled by Ohms law of resistance. Even if it was possible to redirect power to the range, it wouldn't use it if it didn't need it. What I think is happening, something in the house is shorting intermittently. when this happens the stove might be on. Some things can be shorted and still operate. I had a refrigerator that was working fine. One day I had a hand on the Refrigerator Door and reached over to turn the water off, I discovered the short, I was the fuse for a little while. Bottom line, I am quite sure you have something shorted. One last item. I found that the neutral wire coming into a building was fractured and would open circuit once and a while, when this happened all the lights in the building would go bright and computerized equipment would turn off and go haywire, this also might be your mystery problem, good luck. The weird neutral problem had me scratching my(head), for a while.
