Can I hook up an electric cooktop with a range cord?
I'm helping someone rehab a house, and she bought a used electric cooktop. It had about 5' of flexible couduit with 3 wires: red, black, and bare copper. Can I go inside the range and hook up a standard 3-prong range cord, and plug it into a 220 outlet (existing)? A website I read said that it has to be hard-wired into a junction box.
How come you can plug a whole stove, with a broiler & oven into an outlet, but this little 4-buner cooktop has to be hard-wired?
You sure can, but make sure the wires in the junction box are the
proper size for the Cook Top. I prefer to hard wire myself because you
get a better connection. All you have to do is remove the 3 prong
outlet, get a blank plate that fits over the opening, drill a 7/8th hole
in the plate, (assuming it is a 3/8th or 1/2" flex). Put a flex connector
on the flex, attach it to the plate, make your splice and put the plate
on. If you use a 90 degree connector it will hug closer to the wall.
Hope this helps.
