do i have to connect my dryer to duct work?

the space where i have room for the dryer is about 10 feet away from where the duct work goes out of the house. i'd have to run the duct work across my floor (i can't hire someone to cut a hole in the floor and run it under the house).

does it actually HAVE to be venting to the outside? what will happen if i don't?

When we lived in our first apartment, we had no outside Dryer Vent. We put a pair of pantyhose on the end of the hose and this worked fairly well. You do have to remove the pantyhose after several loads and clean them, but it was better than the bare hose. It does add heat to your house which can be good in winter, but bad in summer, It does add moisture in your house which can be good in winter, but bad in the summer when your Air Conditioner is trying to remove extra humidity. Also the pantyhose does allow a small amount of lint to pass through the fabric weave, so you will notice excess lint on things in your wash area and more dust in the rest of your house. I think there are options available at home stores that are made for your problem
