NEC code specs for dishwasher?
I currently have my dishwasher on a suicide cord. I understand the risks of doing it this way, and is only a temporary means for now.
I am working on rewiring the kitchen, but it will not be yet to code until we rip the walls down to the studs later this summer. I'm just primarily trying to fix an issue with an open neutral (3 outlets dead) at this point.
I have an additional circut with one outlet I can tie into on the other side of the kichen and run another recepticle on the other side for now. My question is about NEC code - does it have to be hardwired now or can I still install an outlet under sink and have it plugged in. I am prefering the hardwired method because it just seems safer overall.
Any suggestions or direction for code is appreciated.
As I recall the code for a dishwasher is that it is supposed to have a disconnect. Usually the way this is accomplished is an outlet box (that is hard wired) is installed on the floor or wall behind the dishwasher and the dishwasher plugs into this outlet. The dishwasher does not have to have its' own circuit, it can be shared with a disposal unit for example, but not with the appliance outlets above the counter. This is code in the State of Wisconsin and may not be the code in your state NEC are guidelines that most state adopt in part (90+ %) with their own quirks etc. So check with your local inspector for specifics. I have never met an inspector that wouldn't asnwer a question with a phone call. Just tell him you are planning your kitchen and want to know how to plan properly.
