What will Oven Cleaner do if it gets on the heating element?
Today I decided to clean my oven, since it had lots of baked on stuff, so I got some Easy Off. I didn't read the whole label before using it (just the directions), and so I sprayed the whole inside of the oven, including the heating elements. I planned on doing a cold-overnight cleaning, but ended up leaving it on for only 20 minutes.
I used lots of water to rinse it off, then I sprayed vinegar-water in it and wiped that off. (By the way, my oven is not self-cleaning and the elements cannot be taken out.)
So my question is, what will happen since I sprayed that? Will it be toxic when I turn my oven on? Will it smell once or for a while? How badly? Is there anything further I can do to get the cleaner off of the heating elements?
Your rinsing and using the vinegar-water has pretty much neutralized the oven cleaner. What you did is exactly the right thing since easy off is a strong base and the vinegar is a mild acid, so the end result is when you turn on the oven the element will be about as clean as it can get, and probably cleaner than it was before you started cleaning.
If you have any fumes from the oven they will probably be from the other parts inside the oven. You should be just fine. Job well done!
