How many BTUs should my Air Conditioner have?
I have a fairly small 2bd apartment, 1000 square feet. I am looking to buy an air conditioner - one of those with exhaust that pipe into the window (to remove the exhaust).
I went out looking an air conditioner and there is a multitude out there, but i am not sure how many BTUs it needs to be able to cool at least my living room (which is about 600 square feet), not to mention the entire apartment.
So how many BTUs should my air conditioner be?
Under what conditions? 1000 square feet (20 x 50 for round figures) and assuming an 8 foot ceiling is a substantial size for a single AC unit. For a 20 x 30 living room (a bit smaller than ours at 17 x 28 x 9.75) I would suggest you use at least a 12,000 BTU unit. Most of the swamp-coolers that you are looking at run about 10,000 BTU - that will go some long way towards dehumidification, but it will not give you full control if the temperature if the outside temperature goes above 95F, for example.
Our first floor is a bit over 2000 square feet and we cool most of it with two through-the-wall units, one at 16,000BTU on the cool side of the house, and one at 18,000BTU facing dead-south. But we want "dry" not "meat locker".
The standard residential rule-of-thumb is 1 ton per 600 square feet (Mid-Atlantic coastal). 1 ton is 12,000 BTU. So, using that rule, you would need about 18,000 BTU to do the entire apartment.,
